Henryk Mikołaj Górecki - String Quartets No. 1, 2, 3
The complete quartets of Górecki released by RSQ in 2011 were enthusiastically acclaimed by critics "Gramophone", "Le Monde de la Musique", "The Sunday Times", "The Daily Telegraph". Ewa Szczecińska wrote in Dwutygodnik.com: „RSQ got to the essence of this music" – It Is Dusk makes references to the Renaissance song by Wacław of Szamotuły. Quasi una fantasia in the title of Quartet No. 2 (1990) relates, in turn, to the Beethovenian tradition Moonlight Sonata. The Third Quartet … Songs Are Sung (1994/95–2005) quotes the poem by Velimir Khlebnikov "when people die, songs are sung". They are all joined by the composer’s use of sharp, expressive contrasts: brutalism of heavy sound blocks and prayer meditation contrasts, as well as references to traditional music.
