Setting the question of the destruction of the work of art in the context of the dusk of a certain social structure and cultural formation, the show “The Estate” highlights the fragility of all political orders and the ambivalence of ideologies that come and go. Each revolution brings a new symbolic space and a hitherto unknown dynamics to the amorphous and reborn society. Viewed from the perspective of Aleksander Bardini, who argued that the awareness of the previous stage is always left behind and cannot keep up with political and economic transitions, the barely recognisable fragments of marble portraits and single scenes recovered from destroyed film stock seem to point to the fact that our collective awareness has not yet worked through the results of historical transformations. Thus, to display burnt or calcified items means to highlight the difficult historical legacy, an evocative gesture that confronts the consequences of fundamental changes in the social structure, economic order and overnight reforms in relations of property.
